An Analysis of EFL Students' Perception on Online Discussion through Zoom Meetings at SMA Swasta Nur Azizi Tanjung Morawa in Academic Year 2020/2021

Abstract

As the result of the spread of Corona Virus Disease (Covid-19), the government issued a policy, one of which required teachers and students to do distance learning. This required teachers to create learning methods and media that were compatible with the virtual learning system. The objective of this research was to analyze EFL students' perception on online discussion through zoom meetings. The Qualitative Research Method with Thematic Analysis Approach was used in this research. The subjects of this research chosen were 9 students as the representative of students in SMA SwastaNurAziziTanjungMorawa in academic year 2020/2021. Technique of collecting data used the interview in which the students were interviewed by giving 6 questions which was designed based on the parameters of online discussion. After interviewing 9 EFL students, the themes of each parameters were found. Shyness for reluctance, equal opportunity for participation, and obstacle for internet connection. This research proved that online discussion through Zoom Meetings could develop opportunities for EFL students in the moderate and lower English skills level to be more active and fluent in speaking English.
