dc.description.abstractThis research was concerned with applying group discussion in writing narrative text. The aim of the research is to find out if applying group discussion increases the students’ ability in writing narrative text. The research was conducted by experimental method. The population of the research was the first-year students of SMA Negeri 2 TebingTinggi in academic year 2020-2021.They consisted of 274 students and the sample consisted of 80 students then divided into two groups, 40 students as experimental group and 40 students as control group. The experimental group was taught by applying group discussion and the control group without applying group discussion. The researcher usedwriting test as instrument of the research. The test was writing narrative text and analyzinggeneric structure of narrative text. The score of a text could be obtained from generic structure and grammatical features of the text. After applying the test to the students, the researcher analyzed the data by using the formula of t-test commonly used. After calculating and analyzing the data, it is concluded that tcalculateis higher than ttable(4.05 > 1.66). It showed that there was a significant difference.The pre-test mean score of experimental was 50.38 and post-test was 76.80, the difference is 26.42. The value of tcalculatewas bigger than ttable(4.05 > 1.66) degree of freedom is 78, and the level of significance is 0.05. The result is applying group discussion gives significant effect on the students’ ability in writing narrative text. Concerning the result of t-test above, it shows that group discussion can increase the students’ ability in writing narrative text. It is concluded the hypothesis of this research is accepted.en_US
