THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENTS IN COMPREHENDING ENGLISH TEXTS

Abstract

This research concerns with the discussion of English text comprehension. The objective of this research is to know the ability of the second year students of SMA Swasta Nurani Belawan in comprehending English text. This study was carried out to know the students’ ability in using comprehending English text. The data were collected by using test of English texts. The method used in this research is descriptive-quantitative analysis. To get the data, the second year students of SMA Swasta Nurani Belawan were treated as respondents. The population of this research is the achievement of the second year students of SMA Swasta Nurani Belawan. The respondents consisted of 42 students. However, for sample of the research, it was taken 40 students as the respondents by using random sampling. After analyzing the data, it is found that the result of using words, the average scores or Mean is 55.90 and the standard deviation is 55.1 with the KR-21 is 0.87. It is concluded that the second year students of SMA Swasta Nurani Belawan have the stage of ‘good’ in understanding English text.
