Most of UMN Al Washliyah's English Language Education students lack of understanding in translating English collocations. This happens because of the lack of students' knowledge of collocations so that they do not know and are not accustomed to translating collocations combined words. The objectives of this research are to know how the English department students` understanding in the fourth semester on collocations of translation in the novel ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’. Qualitative Research Methods used in this study. The selected research subjects were 3 students as representatives of the 4th semester students who were taking courses in the Translation Department of English Education UMN Al Washliyah Medan academic year 2019-2020. Data collections techniques using interviews in which students were interviewed after understanding the contents of the novel that has been given by the author. Data were analyzed based on Huberman, & Saldanna (1994) and all data were analyzed based on students' abilities. After the research was conducted, a comparison of each student's understanding was found. In addition, all data showed that the ability to translate students were very dependent on the meaning of each word, not from the meaning of the meaning of the word that can be seen from the mistakes of students in translating English collocation. So many cause errors in concluding the text contained in the novel. Thus, add one finding that from the results of the author's research. The answers from students with high abilities have the results of answers that are more correct than those from students with moderate and low abilities. Highly skilled students have high abilities in translating because of the large number of vocabulary masters, so even though their understanding of the collocation is the same as those of medium and low ability students, the answers of high-skilled students can match the contents of the novel. Students with moderate and low abilities have answers that do not match the contents of the novel. This is due to weak vocabulary mastery and students' weak knowledge of collocation translation. So that it affects students' understanding to answer questions and misunderstands the contents of the novel.en_US
