ELEVATING STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL BY USING PEER GROUP DISCUSSION AND DIGITAL FLASHCARDS AT SMA NEGERI 21 MEDAN IN ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2020-2021

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the improvement of students’ writing skill taught by using peer group discussion and digital flashcards at SMA Negeri 21 Medan in Academic Year of 2020-2021. The research used qualitative research with a case study design. Participants of this research were the students of SMA Negeri 21 Medan. This research carried out in class X-Social 3 consisted of 36 students. Instruments of the research used were tests, observation, and documentation. The findings in this research indicate that by using peer group discussion and digital flashcards as a strategy in teaching writing can improve students’ writing skill. Students were more enthusiastic, active and creative in learning English by using peer group discussion and digital flashcards. It can be seen from the results of the test. In the first writing, the mean score of students was 68.5 and it increases in the second writing with the mean score of students was 78.5. It showed that they made considerable improvement in several aspects of writing skills such as content, vocabulary and language use (grammar). While, organization and mechanics aspects still require further in-depth analysis.
